Defence Cooperation Dialogue in Maldives
On February 14, 2022, Dr. Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary of India co-chaired the 3rd India-Maldives Defence Cooperation Dialogue (DCD) in Maldives with Major General Abdullah Shamaal, Chief of Defence Force (CDF) of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
● Both India and Maldives focused on the joint efforts and capacity building measures to counter trans national crimes and enhance security in the region.
About Defence Cooperation Dialogue (DCD)
The first DCD was held in July 2016 during the presidency of Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom and the 2nd Defence Cooperation Dialogue was held in January 2019.
Defence Secretary of India’s Visit to Maldives
On 13th-14th February, 2022, Dr. Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary of India visited Maldives for discussion with the Maldives National Defence Force. During his visit, Dr. Ajay Kumar held a meeting with Mariya Didi, Minister of Defence of Maldives at the Ministry of Defence in Male, Maldives and discussed on the immense and expanding India-Maldives defence cooperation in the past three years.
Highlights of the Visit:
Defence Secretary of India handed over 2800 kgs of medical equipments to MNDF’s Senahiya Military Hospital. He also inaugurated the Composite Training Centre Phase-1 Annex in the Maldives, which was built with the support of India’s financial assistance. He also handed over the refitted Maldivian Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Huravee, made in India Trinkat class patrol vessel.

India-Maldive relations-As a part of the Indo Maldives relationship India provided Lines of Credit (LoC) of over USD 1-2 billion for infrastructure and grants for community development projects in Maldives. The Maldives was the first beneficiary of India’s vaccine Maitri initiative 2021.
Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an archipelagic country in the Indian subcontinent of Asia, situated in the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from the Asian conti nent’s mainland.
