Indian mathematician Nikhil Srivastava has been awarded the coveted 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize. Two other people have also been chosen for the award.

The other two winners are- Daniel Alan Spielman from Yale University and Adam Marcus, the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne (EPFL).
All three of them have been named as the winners for solving long-standing questions on the Ramanujan graphs and Kadison-Singer problem.
While solving these questions, all three of them uncovered a new relation between linear algebra, graph theory, and the geometry of polynomials.
They published a solution to a decade-long problem called the Kadison-Singer problem. This problem asks whether unique information can be gleaned from a system in which only a few features can be measured or observed. They also published new constructions of Ramanujan graphs describing sparse but highly-connected networks.
The announcement of the winners was made by the National Academy of Sciences.
At present, Nikhil Srivastava is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of California.
These papers on the questions were published in the year 2015.
About Michael and Sheila Held Prize
It is an annual award that honors innovative, outstanding, influential, and creative research in the areas of discrete and combinatorial optimization or related parts of computer science like the design and analysis of complexity theory and algorithms. The prize was instituted in the year 2017.
