- India’s military has launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan :
- The Indian Armed Forces launched ‘OPERATION SINDOOR’, hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed.
- Altogether, nine (9) sites have been targeted.
- These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and
- one Nepali citizen were murdered.

- Cabinet approves ₹11,828.79 crore expansion plan for five new IITS :
- The Union Cabinet approved a major expansion plan to strengthen academic and infrastructure capacities of five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) located in Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Bhilai), Jammu & Kashmir (IIT Jammu), and Karnataka (IIT Dharwad).
- The plan, known as Phase-B construction, entails an investment of ₹11,828.79 crore.
- Civil Defence Framework in India :
- The Civil Defence Act, 1968 was enacted in the aftermath of the 1962 India-China War and the 1965 India-Pakistan War.
- It provides for protective measures for people, property, and infrastructure against hostile attacks from air, land, or sea.
- The Act also authorises:
- Formation of Civil Defence Corps.
- Framing of rules and regulations for implementation.
- India and UK: FTA & Double Contribution Convention :
- India and the UK have successfully concluded an ambitious and mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement, along with a Double Contribution Convention.
- The FTA will boost manufacturing and export opportunities in sectors like textiles, leather, footwear, toys, gems, jewellery and engineering goods among others.
- The free trade agreement will unlock new potential for the two nations.
- J&K Court Declares Ghulam Nabi Fai As A Proclaimed Offender In UAPA :
- A Special Court in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district has declared Ghulam Nabi Fai, a U.S. citizen originally from Kashmir, a proclaimed offender in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
- The order followed after it was submitted by the police that Fai has consistently evaded arrest, despite the issuance of warrants.
- Khelo India Winter Games 2025: Army topped the table :
- The Khelo India Winter Games 2025, the fifth edition of the flagship event under the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, began in Leh, Ladakh on January 23,
- Army topped the KIWG 2025 medal table with seven golds, five silvers and six bronze.
- Himachal Pradesh finished second with six golds, five silvers and seven bronze.
- IAF to Conduct Two-Day Mega Military Exercise Near Pakistan Border :
- The Indian Air Force will carry out a two-day mega military exercise in Rajasthan, along the International Border with Pakistan.
- The IAF has termed it a pre-planned routine training exercise that will involve all the frontline fighter jets, including Rafale, Sukhoi-30 and Jaguar aircraft.
- World Athletics Day: 7 May
- Every year, World Athletics Day is celebrated on May 7 to encourage people, particularly young people, to get involved in sports.
- On July 17, 1912, in Stockholm, Sweden, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was established.
- World Athletics has been the organisation’s name since 2019.
- The inaugural World Athletics Day was observed on May 15, 1996.
- Human Development Index (HDI) :
- The Human Development Index measures a country’s achievement in key human development areas.
- It is released by UNDP.
- Developed by Mahbub ul Haq, anchored in Amartya Sen’s work on human capabilities.
- Three major indicators:
- Health- Life expectancy at birth,
- Education-Expected years of schooling and Mean of years of schooling
- Living standard-Gross National Income per capita (PPP $)
- Cabinet approves revised ‘SHAKTI’ policy
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved fresh coal linkages under the revised ‘SHAKTI’ (Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India) policy.
- The revised policy simplifies coal allocation through two mechanisms-Window-I and Window-II.
- National scheme to upgrade ITIs, establish 5 national skilling centre :
- The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the National Scherrie for Upgradation of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and the establishment of five National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) for Skilling.
- The initiative will be implemented as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with a total outlay of Rs.60,000 crore over five years.
- Civil Defence Drills: 7 May
- The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed states to conduct nationwide mock drills to strengthen civil defence preparedness in response to heightened tensions with Pakistan following a terrorist attack in Pahalgarı.
- The drills are part of India’s passive defence strategy amid continued cross-border firing and rising geopolitical tensions.
- It was carried out in 244 identified districts.
- UNDP 2025: India ranks 130th on Human Development Index :
- India has been ranked 130th out of 193 countries and territories in the 2025 Human Development Report (HDR), titled “A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of Al”, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
- Iceland, with an HDI value of 0.972, ranked at the top of the Index, followed by Norway and Switzerland.
- South Sudan was at the botton at 193.
